Space Healthcare in Leamington is helping to sponsor a charity ball next month (June) for children in Uganda.
The event – to raise funds for Kampala Children’s Centre – is being organised by Dr Dee Wevill, a GP in Dorridge, whose husband Mark is an eye surgeon and heads up the eye unit at Space Healthcare in Clarendon Avenue.
Dee, as part of a larger team and with her whole family, helped to set up and offer free medical clinics in some of the slum areas of Kampala in 2012, as well as doing some work at Kampala Children’s Centre.
Her husband helped to see patients at the clinic, particularly those with eye problems, but also went into surrounding hospitals taking donated equipment to them as well as teaching them new techniques and giving ophthalmology updates. Dee said: “The centre in Kampala is a grassroots charitable project which is making a huge difference to hundreds of vulnerable children – those caught in poverty, orphaned by disease and the legacy of war. “It was founded in 2005 and provides not only houses but true homes; not only health programmes but genuine love and care; not only schools but an education which will enable them to become catalysts for change in their local communities.”
The evening, at The Forest Hotel in Dorridge, on Friday June 13, is billed as one ‘that will change lives’. Tickets are £65 and the event includes a live performance by Destiny Africa Children’s Choir, special guest speakers, pre-dinner drinks and a superb meal, an auction and free entry into prize draws.
During their tour in the USA the choir will be raising funds for the construction of a medical clinic, so funds raised at the ball will go towards equipping the clinic, buying medicines, and providing appropriate staffing.
The clinic will not only benefit the children at KCC but the wider community as well, hence Dee’s passion as a doctor to see the dream fulfilled.
Tickets can be bought online and queries made directly to Dee Wevill at www.destinyafrica.org/kcc-charity-ball/ . The website also has details of when and where the choir are performing.
